As a point of interest, "filling" was done by manufacturers of silk fabrics to increase the final weight of their product. Washing the silk fibers of the gummy residue produced by the silk worms in spinning their cocoons decreased the weight of the silk. Silk was sold by weight. Manufacturers in the 1800's restored the lost weight by soaking the silk fibers in salts of lead, tin, or iron.
