Notes for Martin Häfelfinger:
Revolutionary War service for Martin Heffelfinger: Lancaster Co. PA., 2nd Battalion, 7th Company. 7th Class. PA. Militia. " Military Accounts: Militia " Records of the Comptroller General.
Martin served as a vigilante or "Wildenheeder" or "Dierwecter" during the Indian uprisings, ( French and Indian Wars ) and the Revolutionary War. He also was a pack horseman and teamster, hauling supplies to Gen. Washington. In 1779 Martin served as the Overseer-of-the-Poor for Lancaster Co. PA. It was reported that Martin was good to the poor and aged, and that he retaliated quickly when any of his charges were abused. Martin is on the list of those who took the oath of allegiance before Capt, Henry Schaeffer and John Thome, Ecq. during the years 1777-78. This list is made up of those who resided in Schaefferstown or within the present limits of Heidelberg Twp. Lebanon Co. PA.
Martin moved to Cumberland Co. PA around 1780.
The term vigilante at the time of Martin referred to a man that was part of the Militia doing reconnaissance of the Indians and French.
