Mrs. Frances Juhan Freeman of 4251 Hudson Drive, Oakwood, died peacefully in her sleep the morning of Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003. She lived a full and exemplary life for 90 years. Frances and her husband, Sollace, who died in October 1999, moved to Peachtree Plantation, an assisted living residence, from Summerville, S.C., in 1998. She was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Goliad, Texas, where her father, the Rev. Frank A. Juhan, and her mother, Vera MacKnight Juhan, were living while he was serving Episcopal missions in that area. She moved from Greenville, S.C., with her parents and two brothers, Alexander D. and Charles J. (who was killed in Europe during World War II), to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1924, when her father as elected Bishop of the Diocese of Florida. It was in Jacksonville that she met Sollace, the son of Dr. James V. Freeman and Lucille Butts Freeman, formerly of Brunswick. Frances and Sollace were married April 21, 1938. They have two sons, the Rev. Sollace M. Freeman of Gainesville, who is the Rector of St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Oakwood, and Frank A. Freeman of Summerville, S.C. Frances and Sollace moved their family to Sewanee, Tenn., in 1949. Solace was employed on the administrative staff of the University of the South, a position he held until his retirement in 1984. Frances was an active community volunteer and beloved friend to many faculty, students and neighbors while at Sewanee. Following Sollace's retirement, he and Frances lived in retirement communities in Pensacola, Fla., Jacksonville, Fla., and Summerville, S.C., before moving to Oakwood. Frances, a member of St. Gabriel's, is survived by her two sons seven grandchildren, Stuart Freeman, Birmingham, Ala., John Freeman, Lagos, Nigeria, Melissa Carroll, Murrayville, Elizabeth Daly, Philadelphia, Mitch Freeman, Gainesville, Andy Freeman, Summerville, S.C., and Charles Freeman, Pensacola, Fla. and five great-grandchildren. |
