This name and birth date comes from the passenger list of the ship B.R. Phoenix which sailed from Londonderry Ireland 0n May 13, 1834. Also noted on the passenger list are the names of children. It seems that his wife must have been d ead (?) because apparently she was not with them, however, there was another "spinster" relative who was with them. See the passenger list in photos. |

Robert Smith came to Jacksonville about 1834. At this time Illinois was undergoing a speculative land boom and land owners were platting new cities, using borrowed money, all over the state. Jacksonville was platted in 1829, and so this was a good time to begin a brickyard to accommodate the growth in the population. |
