Note
According to the Seattle Public Library genealogical records librarian there is a death notice for James Mcklnight in the Seattle Times stating that James McKnight, living at 1614 Franklin Ave in Seattle died on 26 April 1906 at age 69. According to the Port Townsend Leader (newspaper), Colonel James MacKnight married Annie McCurdy and when he died he was living in Seattle. This death age would cause a 9 year discrepancy from our family birth record of 1828. (KB 2011)
Note
6 June 2011 I have searched for James McKnight's death certificate in Seattle, but the county recorder has no record of it. The mortuary notice says the body was being sent to Port Townsend. I have searched online at Laurel Hill, St. Mary's, Redman and Fort Worden cemeteries, but there is no record of James being buried in any of them. Karen Baxter

James was excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hi Karen,
I have been able to find info online that Harriet was born 1 Feb 1833 in Lutterworth, England, the 12th of 13 children of William Painter & Ann Sims. William died about 3 years later & by 1841 (census) the 4 youngest children were listed in a "poor house". By 1851 she was back with her widowed mother & 2 brothers & working in a textile factory. She married John McLean in 1855 in nearby Coventry, England, had a daughter, Ann (Nov 1855) & a son, James (abt Jan 1860), & by the time the 1861 census was taken, she was widowed & living with her mother & children in Coventry. I don't know what happened to her husband.
On 23 Apr 1861 Harriet, her 2 children & her mother left Liverpool aboard the "Underwriter" with over 600 other "Saints" on their way to the US & eventually Salt Lake City. Her son James died on the voyage on 29 Apr 1861 of consumption. The ship arrived in NY on 22 May 1861. I can find no actual record of her travel from NY to Utah or anywhere in between, but she married James A. McKnight on 20 Dec 1862 in Salt Lake City. (This was from other family trees, no actual document.) I believe her mother accompanied her to SLC for some period of time, but have found no record of it.
James & Harriet McKnight had 2 daughters in SLC: Harriet (called Hattie), born 1864 & Ursula, born 12 Feb 1868. They are all listed in the 1870 census of the 12'th Ward, along with Harriet's daughter, Annie & the 3 surviving children of James McKnight & Cornelia Stilson; James, Fanny & Willard. Meanwhile, as you know, James had married Mary Ann Fielding in 1863 & started a family with her in a separate residence in the Salt Lake area.
On 25 Nov 1870 Harriet died in SLC. A brief notice in the Deseret News states that her death resulted from complications of childbirth, however I find no record of a third child. She is buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery.
Harriet's oldest daughter Annie, born in England, married Thomas V. Odgers in 1885, raised 4 sons on a ranch in Elko, Nevada, then returned with her husband to SLC sometime before 1920 & died there 14 Feb 1936. James & Harriet's younger daughter, Ursula, married William C. Fletcher in 1888 in Nevada, then moved to Maine, where he was originally from. They adopted a baby girl around 1918-19 & he died in 1930. I lost track of Ursula after that. James & Harriet's other daughter, Hattie, remained in SLC at least through the 1880 census. The next record of her is in Maine on 11 Feb 1904, when she marries Ernest E. Spencer. This is her second (or third?) marriage & she has a 13-14 year old daughter, Ursula Hope Wirt (called Hope). Hope was living in Maine with her aunt & uncle (the Fletcher's) in 1900, so Hattie might have been in the area before 1904. Hattie & Ernest Spencer had a son in 1910 in Maine & she died in Maine 22 Oct 1913.
Hattie's daughter, Hope Wirt, was born in Chicago. By 1904 Mr. Wirt had died. His first name might be Jean, Gene, John (?) & he was born in Germany. I have found no record of a marriage or of Hattie & Wirt together or of his death, & there was some question within the family as to whether he was Hope's "real" father, but he was the only father she knew. Hope married, had 2 children & died in Maine, & she was the maternal grandmother of a friend with whom I'm working on this tree.
